CHAPTER NINETEEN:

MADISON & KYLE

‘I think you’ve got some major explaining to do,’ stated Madison. She was the self-proclaimed leader of her secret group, and she didn’t like losing control. Who was this new kid, and why was he suddenly able to create electricity with Parker — that was her job? Madison could feel the jealousy growing, and she didn’t like it.

‘I don’t know how it happened, it just did,’ explained Kyle. He had his own questions, but most prevalent on his mind was: why did they call in some girl who seemed to hate them? The type of girl that made Kyle’s life hell back in Adelaide.

‘No, pretty boy, I’m talking about the fact that this is your first day and you’ve already managed to infiltrate our secret group,’ barked Madison. Too many people were starting to learn the truth.

‘And you’ve been making a beeline for Parker, I’ve been watching you all day,’ added Griffin, relieved Madison seemed to share his doubts.

Parker was ready to leap forward and defend this cute boy, but she saw his eyes, those eyes that seemed to speak directly to Parker. Was she wrong? Had she fallen under his spell and not recognised a deception because of her infatuation?

‘I promise you, it’s nothing sinister,’ Kyle promptly responded, ‘it’s really not.’ Kyle then went ahead and told his story, his full, unabridged story, ugly scars and all.

Parker noticed his eyes change again, and she saw the pain and knew he was telling the truth.

‘I never knew it would be so wonderful, that light; it’s so beautiful,’ said Kyle with amazement.

Madison was surprised she believed him, strange as his story sounded. Then again, nothing seemed normal anymore. Griffin believed him too, but trust was still a long way off. Parker totally believed him, but she was crestfallen that he hadn’t liked her after all, he was just using her for her powers.

‘So that’s why you wanted to hang around me? I should have guessed.’

‘No, that’s not it at all. I really do—’

There was a knock at the door.

Julia Bennett was trying to open it. The door slightly opened before hitting the chair that was blocking the entrance. ‘Parker Bennett, why is this door blocked? We have no locks on our doors for a reason!’ For the first time today, Julia was regretting her decision to leave four teenagers alone in a bedroom. With no immediate answer from inside the room, Julia pushed harder against the door, ready to use her shoulder for added strength. Just as she applied pressure, the door opened from the inside, and Julia came crashing into the room, almost losing her footing and falling to the floor. She was not happy.

‘Alistair was doing his usual trick and kept annoying us, so I had to lock him out.’

‘We’ll talk about this later.’ Julia was partially annoyed and partially embarrassed by her spill. But she was still able to realise now was probably not the time to interrogate her usually sensible daughter. ‘Your English teacher is on the phone.
